I've got this informal arrangement right now drawing chalk signs for my former place of employment, which I've been dutifully documenting each week. It's been giving me some excellent practice with handlettering, and has proved to be quite a fun little job! Until I have a chance to really put together something nice for you to look at (and I've been at this for a couple of months, so I've got a lot of photos!), here's a recent one:

Hey kids! I drew this the other day (...other month?). If you're in the St Louis area on October 14, come on out, 'cause it'll be a darn good time. The movie is going to be Zombieland. Not only can you watch a crazy sport (it's kind of like if you took hockey or soccer and put everybody on bikes), you can play with us! It's super fun and we've got spare equipment for the borrowing.

Now that I'm all commenced and everything, I've pretty much been spending my time moving back home, re-learning how to live in one place (instead of just being on break here), and working (so that I have something to back up my fantastic plans for prints and notecards and things). Plus there's been seeing family and friends that I haven't in months, doing a wee bit of traveling (two times since New Year's Eve!)...to put it plainly, it's sort of amazing to me how little time has actually elapsed, just given how much stuff has been happening (good things, to be sure!).

The long and short of this is that I have neglected basically everything art-related, as good as my intentions not to do so have been. To explain my lack of posting (and hopefully kick myself into doing something again), I present you with the explanatory entry that you have just read!

While I am not really leaving you with any artwork of my own (other than the little bitty prints in that photo up there), I would like to point out the list of links on the right side of this blog, which will take you to the pages of a number of dear friends of mine (and one relative!—my dad, Todd. It's a different site than the one linked above, so you should check out both!). They've all been really awesome to work with over the past few years (or just awesome to know, for the ones I haven't had the pleasure of working with), and deserve your attention. Special shout outs to my critique group from last semester ("Lust for Lukewarm Flannel"), which included the fantastic likes of: Annie Wu, Ariyana Suvarnasuddhi, Emma Rochon, and Noel Hernandez (thanks for being so great!).

Subaqueous Activity Live!

There's also a little process book underneath them that has images of all the cuts and a lot of the preliminary prints (not included here, mainly because it doesn't really look all that exciting). Puffers

Newest cuts, finished earlier tonight! And guess what else? They're also the last cuts of this series! And probably one of the most adorable, but I'm terribly biased since pufferfish are one of my absolute favorite animals ever (they are just so cute). An excellent way to finish out the project, in my opinion.

With any luck the finished prints will be up in the next few days, but given that I am headed homeward tomorrow night, it may take a bit longer. I've done a little bit of work with them, though, and things are looking pretty good. These ones actually lined up the best out of all of the prints so far, which I suppose makes sense since they're #4 (or numbers 7 and 8, really).

In other news, the special projects using these prints that I mentioned before are looking like they are both pretty much good to go (once I get them moving a little more) so check back for that soon too!

A Formidable Opponent

I am just a posting fiend these days.

I don't know about you, but I'd be pretty well intimidated.

So this guy officially means that I'm 3/4 done with my planned prints, which is exciting! I have some fantastic plans for them that will be revealed once they're a little more concrete. And since I like including Fun Facts about my work: my friends advised me to look at Stephen Colbert for the expression, which prompted some confusion from others as to why "Look at Stephen Colbert" was included in our group's notes for that day's critique.

If you want to see the Octopus, Angler, and Catfish in all their real life glory (plus print #4 and mystery future project #1), they'll be hanging in the December Commencement show at MICA, which is up from December 4-20. I don't know where they'll be yet, so details to folow, I suppose.

In other exciting news, I finally quit putting off that "buy a domain" thing, and as of about fifteen minutes ago, this blog can be reached via a lovely little redirect from rosemarydavis.net.

I think it would be pretty fantastic if catfish really came in neon magenta. Probably less fantastic for the catfish, unless muddy water was also neon magenta...which might also be cool. (speaking of crazy things involving catfish, ever hear of noodling? Well, uh, I guess you have now. Just trying to assist with that whole "you learn something every day" thing.)

Two cuts and a minitour*

I swear, I'm getting things done. Really. Here's some proof that I'm not just hanging around doing nothing all the time:

It's a catfish, playing with a ball of ~~yarn~~ seaweed. Awww. Prints soon, just working out some color stuff as I get the next round of cuts ready.

For those who are interested to see just where it is I'm making all this stuff, here's that minitour I mentioned in the title:

This is my half of the studio I share with Emma Quinn. Some things to note: that big ol' pile of wood shavings is from carving the cuts above; hanging on the wall are the preliminary sketches/separations for the angler (done in pink and blue highlighter), and my extremely hi-tech and professional palette is made of taped down duralar with half a ziploc bag taped over the top. (The eyes are leftover from the last people who used the space.)

This is the corner of our studio, where I've taken over the supplied tiny table with piles of prints and wood-blocks, and where we have posted a pin-up by Gil Elvgren entitled "Pleasant to Si". It's real classy-like, and is our "INSPIRATION FOR EVERYTHING" (which is written across the top, so no one forgets).

So there are the woodcuts I've been laboring over. They were being a total pain and splintering and causing me to use so much force with each cut that I was worried for my own safety, but then I got some expert advice and now they are not only significantly less of a pain, but they're finished! This week I'll be printing them (one on top of the other...exciting transparencies and overlaps will ensue!) and then the results will be posted for all the world to see.

Extra special bonus: brush-and-ink self portrait I did in my life-drawing sketchbook. In any case, I like it. I'm usually not so hot at the brush-and-ink business, and I feel like I'm getting the hang of it.

Long time no post. Really, really long time no post! I'm sorry to anyone checking in regularly. I'm sorry also because it may continue to be a fairly long time between posts, even though school is back in session and therefore, shouldn't I have lots and lots of things to put up? Huh, huh? Shouldn't I?

The answer is "kind of". See, this semester my classes have worked out so that I'm only taking two studio classes—life drawing and thesis. So why the high probability of a scarcity of posted work this semester? Because Studio #1 is Life Drawing, which is not so much fabulous artwork as it is super-academic practice work (which is fantastic and I love it, which is good because goodness knows I need the practice), and Studio #2 is thesis, for which I am working slowly and laboriously on some woodcuts. I'll post some progress on those every once in awhile, but each image is going to take three weeks to reach full completion (sketches to cuts to prints), so it might be some time between when I get them onto here.

In the meantime, here's a photo of some (unfolded) cards I made when I interned at Firecracker Press this summer. This the project that inspired my current thesis work (featuring more sea creatures partaking in silly activities—stay tuned for a very literary angler fish):

Tacos!

Hey look, tacos! These were some spot illustrations (gouache, digital, you know the drill) done for a blog my Illustrating the Edible class designed/drew things for. I went to Taco Fiesta (the top two pictures) and El Taquito Mexicano (bottom two), which were both pretty good. The blog got written up in the Baltimore Sun, too,which was neat (and hey, I'm quoted, neato). I would also like to mention my dear friend Emma Quinn, who accompanied me on these adventures and assisted in reference-photo-taking/Mexican-food-eating/transportation.

In other news, I have returned to my native land (Saint Louis) for the summer, and the whirlwind of unpacking and packing and organizing and all of that has me with very little to post art-wise. Bear with me, I promise the pictures will return someday. Someday soon, even. I also just started interning at Firecracker Press so I will eventually have pictures of what I do there (but right now I am still learning and therefore doing a fairly limited amount of printing. I did help make around 200 buttons the other day, though, which let me tell you, feels like quite an accomplishment).

ps. If you are in Saint Louis, I have been dropping off little stacks of business cards in various locations. They feature this image . I'm making this sound much more like a treasure hunt than it really is, but sometimes these things happen.

East of the Sun, West of the Moon

A new finish! Based on the Norwegian fairytale East of the Sun, West of the Moon. All gouache. My absolute favorite parts of this are the mountains to the right and the girl's knee where the bear's fur overlaps (in case you are curious). This scan doesn't really show it, but all that gold is actually quite shiny and sparkly.

For those of you keeping up: The Alumni Art Show at New City School is up as of yesterday, and will be until June 8. There is a reception on Wednesday, May 27, from 3:30-5:30pm. My Snow White and Rose Red are in it, along with a bunch of other work that I am assuming is excellent (I haven't seen it yet, what with my being quite a few states away at this point in time).

Here's something kind of different for you. This is the collected spreads from a book project I did using excerpts from Double Duce by Aaron Cometbus. You can't really read it at this size, but you get the idea. It's an accordion book, so each line would actually be stuck all together into one big long chain (but that's really difficult to look at on the internet). Be warned, there is some strong language, though I'm pretty sure it's mostly illegible.

Here are the covers (front and back, respectively):

The images used for this project were gathered by marking out a 2.5" square on the cover of a magazine, then slicing through the whole thing with a matte knife (box cutter). Everything was put together using InDesign, and the final book is 5" square.
(fun fact: the title of this post comes from the song "Landlords" by Pinhead Gunpowder—members including Cometbus himself as well as Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day. The full lyrics scroll along the very bottom of the book's pages.)

It's funny how much I have grown to enjoy making books. I remember having fairly recently proclaimed them to be a bane of my existence, and yet these days I am folding accordions like nobody's business. Speaking of which, I've got another one in the works, which will hopefully be ready for its internet debut in the next week or so.

Snow White and Rose Red, along with Rootabaga Country...one more time!

So here's a shot of Snow White and Rose Red on the wine bottles for which they were created (really excellent project in my food illustration class). These paintings are also going to be on my fancy new promo postcards, which are currently being printed.

Another one you've seen-but-not-seen-completely is my Rootabaga Country, which I have now FINALLY finished. As you might be able to tell if you've been keeping up, this is not the same as the one that I have been posting, it's a new version in gouache that's about half as big. I realized while working on the other version that there is a reason I don't really use acrylics...it takes me for-ever to finish anything. So I shrunk down my pencils, went back to my faithful gouache, and goodness knows how many weeks later...a finish! I still plan on eventually finishing my acrylic version, just not while I'm in school.

Snow White and Rose Red

Sorry for the long time with no activity, things are getting hectic. I actually have a lot of things to post, I just also have enough other stuff going on at the moment that I don't remember to post them. I'm going to have more things up over the course of the week, so keep an eye out. Anyway, here are the finishes from that sketch I posted way back at the beginning of the month. Gouache, some digital, based on the fairytale Snow White and Rose Red.

These will actually be hanging in the Alumni Art Show at my former elementary school, New City School (in Saint Louis, Missouri). It's a really cool place, so you should have a look at their site and check out the show whenever it's up—I'll post dates when I know them for sure.

Fairytales and Rootabaga Country

These two are part of a semester-long project I'm doing. They're based on fairytales, one of which you can probably guess pretty easily, the other one maybe not so much (I don't think anyone I've talked to has been familiar with it). So, uh, guess away? Three or four more of these are coming over the next few weeks, keep an eye out. Both are gouache with a little bit of digital color correcting.

And bonus! This is a painting I've been working on since the second or third week of the semester, but got really behind because of sickness and an unfortunate incident involving a rather violent windstorm and almost no sleep. Anyway, it's turned into a bit of an experiment in which I relearn how to use acrylic.

It's based on a description of Rootabaga Country (from Carl Sandburg's Rootabaga Stories) found in The Dictionary of Imaginary Places, and hopefully it is apparent that it is far, far, far from finished.

So I've been feeling lame for not posting anything, but seriously, it's been lots of sketch weeks and not many finishes (by not many, I mean none until this week). Anyway, here's something new to the internet, just to switch things up a little around here. A girl with a gun and a sword, on a page from a picture book about medieval castles. Neat! From an ongoing narrative sketchbook group project last semester. Done in gouache.

Granny Comics, The Complete Set!

Strange as it may seem, this is actually not a repost, it's a condensing post. Since I really don't do comics almost ever, and my blog was starting to look like that was all I did, and I am going to start aiming a little more professionally here (practice for when I have a real website), I figured I would smush them all together. That way, not only does this blog more accurately represent my work, but it's easier for you, the viewer, the lover of the Granny comic—you now have them all in one place. Why did I choose to condense to this post rather than just repost the whole lot? Simple, really: I didn't want to lose Dan's technical tips (in comments, below).

So here's the intro, just so anyone who didn't see these in their original posts can be enlightened. This was my final project for a sequential art class I took last semester (taught by Brian Ralph, who is a cool guy). The topic, as I'm sure you have figured out to an extent, is my great grandmother (Granny), and 100% Completely True Stories (no joke) about her life. She was an experience, and the project of five pages of comic seemed like a good medium to share the crazy/awesomeness of these stories.

The posting of the comic entitled "Pickles" is still dedicated to Ariyana, since it is her favorite.

Each comic was inked in micron, then colored digitally (partially using dropped-in textures).

The Happiest Little Caterpillar in the Land!

Since I decided in a moment of insanity to essentially take three studio classes in two days (ie, the vast bulk of my workload for the semester), I'm actually done with finals. Who knew doing something that insane would eventually be beneficial? (Certainly not me, for most of the Sunday and Monday nights of the past few months). In any case, that gives me time to post some things (and clean my room, and sleep normal hours, and pack up all my stuff so I can go home in a few days...you know).

So of course, instead of posting my finals, I'm posting something from last Spring. I never ended up putting it up anywhere, which is CRAZY because I love it to bits. As soon as we got the assignment of doing a cut paper piece, I decided I was going to do something with lots of plants and vines so I could have crazy little overlaps all over the place. I like to call it something to the effect of the subject of this entry (he is just so pleased!).

It's cut paper (almost wrote "cute paper"...that too, I guess) sitting on top of a colored-paper background (it's not actually attached, it just sits inside of a paper jacket of sorts so it doesn't get destroyed). Done with an exacto knife, Ingres drawing paper and a whole heck of a ton of patience.

15 Minutes of Fame

Stamp project! Theme was "15 Minutes of Fame". My subject—Adrianne from America's Next Top Model/My Fair Brady (which I never actually watched, and I think I'm okay with that).

Cute Little Girls with Cute Little Hairstyles

The above is the unofficial title of this project. The assignment for me was to draw directions/spot illustrations for a Seventeen-type magazine. I took the advice of a fellow student, and started out by thinking about things I enjoy drawing. The conclusion? I like drawing cute little girls. I like drawing cute little hairstyles. Combine them, and voila!

Gouache and pen. The colors look kind of desaturated on here for some reason. Sorry :(

ps. Still haven't forgotten about this blog. Have been lately mourning not having much to post, since the past few weeks have been full of sickness and holiday breaks and sketch weeks and similar. More soon!

Nastile

Two posts in two days? What is this nonsense?

Hey look, I do text, too.
For those not in the know, nastile is a combination between the words "nasty" and "vile", created when a friend was attempting to describe the taste of Tropical Sprite Remix and the words got confused. It's pretty much been my favorite word since then, which was at least four years ago, maybe even five.

First one is done with micron pen and then colored digitally, the second is entirely Photoshop, and the third...well, the third is done using my hair (I shed a whole lot. That's about 10 days worth of hair that falls out of my head, minus the vast quantity that was shed when I was not home and therefore unable to tuck it into my little ziploc hair-storage bag). The hair one is probably the grossest (and funniest!) project I have ever done.

La Tete de Maman

Assignment to do an illustration for a movie review—we picked movies from the list of what was showing, then had to to to the theater and sketch during the film. Afterward, we created a single picture to go along with an imaginary review for the movie, like we'd been given the job.

I ended up seeing a French movie called La T ê te de Maman (In Mom's Head). I wasn't really sure what to expect of it at first, but it ended up being very enjoyable (plus I am a sucker for movies where color is used to enhance the visuals and the plot, and though the trailer below doesn't really show it, that is definitely the case with this movie).

My illustration is entirely watercolor (well...not entirely, there's the teeniest bit of white gouache in there for color correction). The final version is actually a cropped section of this painting, but I liked how my sketch was going so much that I just continued it with the intention/plan to crop it digitally later.

A Map of Important and Memorable Injuries

See, told you I hadn't forgotten.

This is part of a project for class where we were assigned to create a map of some sort. I decided to map out scars I've gotten over the years along with the stories of where they came from. My execution eventually evolved into six "trading cards," each of which featured a detail-painting of the scar (or scars), some notes on the cause/specific location/size of the scar/injury, a pain rating, and a paragraph about how the scar came to be. Once flipped over, the cards fit together into a full-body painting where the locations of all the scars will be marked.

Currently I am in the process of revising some of the specifics of the project, so I'm just posting the detail paintings. They're done in gouache and watercolor. Short explanations of each follow the thumbnails.

left-to-right:
1. Scraped my thigh when I slipped while playing frisbee at a neighborhood pool. I still maintain I wasn't running.
2. Didn't realize that I wasn't strong enough to get all the way over a fence until I had been struggling at the top for awhile. Once I figured it out, my friends helped me, but I tried really hard to do it on my own first.
3. Mystery scar. The only raised one I have, and the only one where I have no idea of when or how I got it.
4. Knocked my head into a rebar-grid archway at the City Museum (specifically, this part). Didn't actually notice I'd broken skin until hours later.
5. Got a giant splinter in my foot when I was four and refused to let my dad pull it out. 16 years later and I still have a little hole in my foot.
6. Fell off my bike playing chase. I was completely calm until I reached my back steps (eight very large houses away from where I fell), at which point, I realized how much pain I was in and fell into a little heap of tears.

It's been a hectic, ridiculous couple of weeks and I haven't really been feeling much of what I've been making/a lot of it has been sketches anyway. In short: I've got nothing worth posting right now. I've got some stuff in the works, though, so hopefully within the next few days I will throw something up here for your (all like, three of you or whatever, and that's a generous guess) viewing pleasure.

Tree Girls

They did not march in classic precision, they were a mixed bag. Victims, victimised and victimising. Perhaps the victims came out, by a long shot, ahead of the steady self-determined victimisers. They escaped; the rowdy actual lost generation was not actually their generation. They had roots (being in their mid-twenties and their very early thirties) still with that past. They reacted against a sound-board, their words echoed, were not lost in the drawl of later sirens. If Bella predicted that later film or stage-type, maybe Bella was ahead of them, more fashionable, then, the more determined to self-destruction; it was not because Bella was so actually of the lost, of that lost generation, it was simply that Bella was anyway doomed to self-extinction. In any time, lost, the harlot of the middle-age miracle-play, while Julia was almost ridiculously some nun-figure, gaunt, over-intellectualized, of the same play. But Bella was not a harlot, Julia was not a saint. When Rafe Ashton said to Julia, "I would give her a mind, I would give you a body," he was biting off, extravagantly, much more than even he could chew.
